Paper Heart started simply. I wanted to make earrings for myself and for my friends. The name came later, inspired by a friend who had a successful heart transplant, and it felt like the right fit for something handmade, personal, and full of color.
I have always been drawn to bold graphic patterns and oversized statement jewelry, especially the shapes and color combinations that have a little 80s energy. Paper turned out to be the perfect material: there are so many beautiful specialty papers to discover, and every sheet offers something different once it is cut, shaped, and wrapped around a lightweight frame.
A lot of Paper Heart pieces are made while I fit creative work into an otherwise ordinary day. I spend plenty of time in virtual meetings, and statement earrings became an easy way to brighten up my look and make a routine day feel more expressive.
I enjoy the process as much as the finished piece: choosing the paper, deciding how the pattern should fall, and seeing a flat sheet turn into something wearable.
Every pair is made one at a time, in Olympia, Washington, with the hope that it gives someone the same feeling I get: a little more color, self-expression, and fun.
